How long does it take to get a passport?
Standard processing typically takes around 5 working days from the day of submission, provided all documents and the photo meet the requirements. Express service is available for an additional fee when urgent travel is required.
How long is a passport valid?
Adult passports are issued with a validity of up to 10 years, while passports for children below 15 years are issued for 5 years. Many destinations require at least 6 months of remaining validity at the time of entry.
When should I renew my passport?
It is recommended to renew at least 6 months before the expiry date. This avoids issues at airline check-in and entry into countries that enforce a 6-month validity rule.
What should I do if my passport is lost or stolen?
Report the loss or theft to the police as soon as possible and obtain an official report. Then submit a replacement application along with the police report and your National ID.
Can someone else collect my passport?
Yes. An authorised representative may collect your passport on your behalf by presenting a signed authorisation letter, a copy of your National ID and their own ID at the collection counter.
Do children need their own passport?
Yes. Every Maldivian citizen — including infants and children — must hold an individual passport for international travel. Parental consent and supporting documents are required for applicants below 18 years.
Can I apply for a passport from outside the Maldives?
Yes. Maldivian citizens residing or travelling abroad may apply through the nearest Maldivian Embassy or High Commission, which will coordinate with the immigration authority.
For destination-specific visa requirements, please consult the embassy of the country you intend to visit before booking your travel.
