Maldivian Passports

The Maldives issues three categories of passports — ordinary, official and diplomatic. Each is tailored to the holder's purpose of travel and carries different privileges abroad.

Ordinary Passport

Issued to all Maldivian citizens for personal, business, study or leisure travel.

  • Validity: 5 or 10 years depending on age of applicant.
  • Children below 15 years are issued a 5-year passport.
  • Biometric ePassport with embedded chip and digital photograph.
  • Recognised by all ICAO member states.

Official Passport

Issued to government officials travelling abroad on official duty.

  • Granted only on official assignment authorised by the relevant ministry.
  • Validity is tied to the duration of the official posting or assignment.
  • Must be returned to the issuing authority once the assignment ends.
  • Cannot be used for personal or leisure travel.

Diplomatic Passport

Issued to diplomats, high-ranking state officials and accredited representatives of the Maldives.

  • Eligibility defined under the Diplomatic Immunities and Privileges Act.
  • Provides diplomatic courtesies at most international borders.
  • Spouse and dependants of the holder may also qualify in specific cases.
  • Subject to recall by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Misuse of an Official or Diplomatic passport is a serious offence and may lead to cancellation and legal action.

Validity & renewal

  • Apply for renewal at least 6 months before expiry to avoid travel disruption.
  • Many countries require at least 6 months remaining validity for entry.
  • Damaged or full passports must be replaced before further international travel.
